This was taken by William M. Vander Weyde sometime around 1900, one of 402 images posted on the George Eastman House museum’s flickr stream since mid-July 2008.
Like a growing number of museums and public institutions around the world, the Eastman House is putting portions of their vast collections online and inviting viewers to add tags and additional info about the images.
Not much more is known about this particular photo, taken about ten years after the first electrocution in the U.S. in 1890. One comment on the photo’s page suggests that this may have been a posed, or staged, shot.
The Eastman House collection includes more than 400,000 photos, including a strong archive of works by Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen and several key European modernists. The museum collection also includes some 25,000 film titles and 3 million cinematic artifacts.
