The Balmaceda Glacier – Pic du Jour

Balmaceda Glacier, Southern Patagonian Ice Field, Chile, 08-Feb-2013

For the Earth Day edition of the ‘So Very Glad I Saw it Before it Disappears’ File, here are a few shots I took in February of the Balmaceda Glacier in Chile’s Bernardo O’Higgins National Park. Just 15 years ago the ice was at a level even with the Seno Ultima Esperanza, or Last Hope Sound. For the rapidly retreating Balmaceda, all hope is gone.

  2. Whoa! The video is frightening! Glad you had a chance to see the Balmaceda Glacier before it disappears completely. I’m afraid at this rate, we’ll never see it.

  3. Wow, beautiful place. Guess I better get going if I want to make it.
