The Mango Vendor of Cartagena (Pic du Jour)

Over the past 48 hours I’ve been offered silver jewelry, leather bags, Caribbean massages, ruby necklaces, black women, Cuban cigars, cheap t-shirts, and bags of dope. I declined them all, but have already become a loyal customer for this gentleman, whose devotion to his crossword seemingly supersedes his interest in commerce. No, not your typical vendor, peddler or tout, but his mangos have yet to let me down.

  1. How fun that Cartagena is rolling out the carpet for you! Ask and you’ll receive! One can never have too many mangoes! Makes me think of the Bruce Cockburn song:

    • I think just about everyone who visits here gets the same carpet roll out. :) Great song!

  2. I love this picture. You really captured the feel for this place and this man’s routine. I felt like I was there.
