Naomi Wolf: Sex charges against Assange an insult to rape victims worldwide

From Wolf’s analysis:

In other words: Never in twenty-three years of reporting on and supporting victims of sexual assault around the world have I ever heard of a case of a man sought by two nations, and held in solitary confinement without bail in advance of being questioned — for any alleged rape, even the most brutal or easily proven. In terms of a case involving the kinds of ambiguities and complexities of the alleged victims’ complaints — sex that began consensually that allegedly became non-consensual when dispute arose around a condom — please find me, anywhere in the world, another man in prison today without bail on charges of anything comparable.

Of course ‘No means No’, even after consent has been given, whether you are male or female; and of course condoms should always be used if agreed upon. As my fifteen-year-old would say: Duh.

But for all the tens of thousands of women who have been kidnapped and raped, raped at gunpoint, gang-raped, raped with sharp objects, beaten and raped, raped as children, raped by acquaintances — who are still awaiting the least whisper of justice — the highly unusual reaction of Sweden and Britain to this situation is a slap in the face. It seems to send the message to women in the UK and Sweden that if you ever want anyone to take sex crime against you seriously, you had better be sure the man you accuse of wrongdoing has also happened to embarrass the most powerful government on earth.

That laws are different in Sweden and USA should hardly come as a surprise to anyone and definetly not to Wolf. But do you really believe in the honey-trap theory? Assange says publicly that he was warned about honey-traps and then he falls into two within two days. And if he did this around one speaking arrangement in Sweden, how many other ones must he have fallen into on other occassions.

It is more likely that Assange was just behaving like the intellectual rockstar and didn’t realize that it could come back and bite him.

Anyway, I appreciate your blog except for my different opinions on Assange.

No argument that Assange is kind of a putz. If it was a honey trap, that makes him an even bigger putz.

I appreciate though Wolf’s analysis of the unprecedented standard applied here. If it now becomes standard practice for governments to begin extradition procedures against all accused rapists –and this case isn’t really about rape– then it’s a great precedent. But I don’t see that happening, do you? It’s difficult to imagine that the US did not pressure Sweden and the UK.

The end result is that this is putting the focus on Assange and his escapades, distracting from what may continue to emerge from the leaks themselves. That’s the main goal here. Justice for the accusers is secondary, if that.

    And, thanks for visiting. 🙂

I think the problem is the same as with Roman Polanski, famous man vs. unknown woman. Except that Assange is a figurehead of an organisation, that should be able to exist without him. I also believe that he would be better of in a Swedish prison, than in an American and I doubt and hope Sweden won’t extradite him if he gets aquitted.

I think Sweden demanded him extradited because he made those honey-trap comments. if he would just have left the investigation, I believe it would have been handled in his abscense, but since he goes around and insinuates things, that probably made him some enemys in Sweden. Another thing to think about is that Sweden is the country in EU with the highest rape/molestation statistics and I doubt there are actually more rapes going on in Sweden.

Anyway, hopefully wikileaks will walk away from this whole thing as a more independent and stronger organisation, that can’t be stopped by removing one person at the top. I will look into whether or not Sweden have demanded rapists to be extradited before, I can’t think of a case right now, but then again media loves this story.

Ok. I’m already back. I googled: Begärd utlämnad våldtäckt – Which means Demanded extradited rape. And it seems there are precedents for this. Not a lot, but definetly enough to justify going after someone accused for two rapes.

What sets Assange apart is the attention his case has been getting.
