The Balmaceda Glacier – Pic du Jour

Balmaceda Glacier, Southern Patagonian Ice Field, Chile

For the Earth Day edition of the ‘So Very Glad I Saw it Before it Disappears’ File, here are a few shots I took in February of the Balmaceda Glacier in Chile’s Bernardo O’Higgins National Park. Just 15 years ago the ice was at a level even with the Seno Ultima Esperanza, or Last Hope Sound. For the rapidly retreating Balmaceda, all hope is gone.

Related: check out this time-lapse footage released in late 2011 by researchers in Chile showing the dramatic retreat of the Jorge Montt Glacier, like Balmaceda, also located in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

As a fellow blogger suggested, we should ask, ‘what are we going to do about this?’ it’s saddening to watch as is equally saddening to know that some people claim there is no global warming.
you’re doing a grand job of sharing interesting material as you journey from southern hemisphere to northern. z

Whoa! The video is frightening! Glad you had a chance to see the Balmaceda Glacier before it disappears completely. I’m afraid at this rate, we’ll never see it.

Wow, beautiful place. Guess I better get going if I want to make it.
