Culture and Modernity – Pic du Jour

La Paz 009
La Paz, Bolivia, 22-Apr-2013

Indulge me in a quick poll, please.

What do you see here: A fiercely traditional Aymara woman embracing one aspect of convenience that modernity brings? Or, yet another example of modern technology intruding upon traditional cultures?

Culture is this week’s WordPress Photo Challenge theme, a term that guest blogger and photographer Aaron Joel Santos admits is a ‘loaded’ one, that “can embody everything and nothing”. I hope this image falls somewhere in between.

How do you keep them on the farm once they’ve seen Karl Hungus? Seriously though, encroaching tech can’t be stopped. Is it good? Bad? Little of both. Make sure our reach does not exceed our grasp and there’s a happy spot in there somewhere.

Oh, that’s a loaded choice for an archaeologist. I’d like to think it’s the first, but I can certainly see elements of the second.

wow, look at the pingbacks! 🙂

it makes me a bit sad to see.. yes, there’s a need to stay in communication, yet the indians, who have always been in tune with the pulses of nature and a sixth sense, will lose that edge… she has totally tuned out what’s happening around her. less is more.
