Cusco, Peru, 1 May 2013 — I love a parade, and if it’s meant to celebrate May Day, that’s all the better.
These were taken in Cusco’s central Plaza de Armas, the parade’s focal point, where hundreds of dancers and musicians performed and several hundred labor union members and left-leaning political party activists marched to celebrate the international workers’ holiday. The majority of the participants were members of several dozen local folk dance groups, clad in colorful costumes and accompanied by musicians playing traditional instruments.
I could have done without the firecrackers, although they didn’t seem to bother the young dancers at whose feet they were exploding. Most didn’t even flinch.
Below, 21 shots in all.
