Inauguration Day in Ecuador as Correa’s Citizen’s Revolution Continues

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa

Quito, Ecuador – Today was Inauguration Day in Ecuador, marking the beginning of the third and last term for President Rafael Correa. Above is a quick snap of Correa as his motorcade was making its way towards the Plaza Grande, or Plaza de la Independencia, earlier this afternoon.

Correa is immensely popular domestically, reelected in February by a strong majority with 57 percent of the vote. His nearest challenger, conservative banker Guillermo Lasso collected just 22 percent. At the moment Correa is riding approval ratings that are pushing 90 percent and has a strong majority in the National Assembly, a good start for his final push at the helm of his Alianza PAIS party-led Revolución Ciudadana, or ‘Citizen’s Revolution’. Here’s an AFP analysis of what can be expected from his last term.

A dozen heads of state and representatives from 90 countries attended today’s ceremonies, including Bolivian president Evo Morales, below. Among the Ecuadorians included here is National Assembly President Gabriela Rivadeneira. Just 29, she has been mentioned by some observers as Correa’s heir.

Was a nice day, once I accepted the fact that I’m back in the mountains and far away from the coast. 🙂
