Juan Cole on Why Correa might give Snowden Asylum

With NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden apparently on his way to Ecuador, the country will be on the receiving end of great deal of media scrutiny over the next several days, particularly in the U.S. Since most people in the U.S. couldn’t find Ecuador on a map, let alone know much about the country’s recent history and U.S. government and corporate meddling there, Juan Cole offers this brief primer:

        Terrific. 🙂

  2. I should say I’m surprised about all the horrible things the U.S. has done to Ecuador, but I’m not. The atrocities the U.S. committed in Nicaragua are despicable, too. What shameful bullies! If you happen to run into Snowden ( of course, you won’t because you are in CA now) tell him we have a little place he can stay in Nicaragua. I think he would feel right at home considering how Ortega feels about the U.S., too.

The historical record and legacy of the U.S. in Latin America, particularly Central America, is abominable.

That’s a kind offer to Snowden, btw. 🙂 No comment for the moment on Daniel Ortega. We can save that discussion for cocktail hour on Ometepe.
