This was the start of yesterday’s Volkswagen Ljubljana Marathon, which this year celebrated its 18th edition. Below is the finish area in the Slovenian capital’s Congress Square with castle hill looming large. And below that, a 15-pic gallery.
The race has grown markedly in those 18 years. Four hundred eighty runners completed the marathon and half-marathon races in the inaugural 1996 edition; yesterday, 12,795 took part over the two distances. Several thousand more ran the early morning 10K, and 6,540 participated in Saturday’s children’s races.
The men’s winner was Mulugeta Wami of Ethiopia, clocking 2:10:26. Kenyan Caroline Chepkwony won the women’s race in 2:27:27. Check out my report for the IAAF, track & field’s international governing body, here.
