Q&A With Stephanie Cumming on the Making of ‘Shirley: Visions of Reality’

I watched Shirley: Visions of Reality early yesterday evening, a work that will wind up on many shortlists of the finest and most successful experimental feature films of 2013. If you missed it and have 90 seconds to spare, check out my review.

Stephanie Cumming, who plays Shirley, was at last night’s screening at the Ljubljana International Film Festival and took some time to discuss the film and answer questions afterwards. She provides some great insights into the making of the film, the long deliberate process, and her experiences playing the lead. Cumming is a Canadian-born dancer and choreographer based in Vienna. She is a co-founder of Liquid Loft, a performance group based in the Austrian capital.

Below is most of her talk, a little over eight minutes in length. It was shot with my mobile phone so the picture quality is somewhat shoddy, but the audio is fine. Enjoy!

    Hi Bob,
I’m also in Cleveland. Do you know whether or not there will be any chance to see this film locally in a theatre? I wonder if it will be at the Cleveland Film Festival next year.
    Thanks!

Hi Cindy – I have no idea really, I spend most of my time in Slovenia where I saw a screening of this last November. Only suggestion I have is to check the film’s site for updates: http://www.shirley-visions-of-reality.com/

Or, maybe send along a series of emails to the Cleveland film fest folks suggesting the film. Couldn’t hurt. 🙂
