Guard Tower, Auschwitz (Pic du Jour)

Today’s Pic du Jour, the 180th (!) straight, is a door lock on a guard tower located at the western end of the Auschwitz Birkenau Concentration Camp, a relic of a bygone era that refuses to die.

    i love precise images like this, especially locks.. without knowing where this was taken, i might have imagined it was a lock to a tack room, and i was about to open the door to a room full of saddles… or perhaps it opened a well-tended colonial home with a sunny courtyard with cascading flowers… but knowing its true location fills me with sobering thoughts…. it’s a true relic, and pondering the ghosts that surely linger beyond that lock, i note a hollow feeling of what that it represents…
