Quito, Ecuador – Street Scenes | Stock Image Gallery 2
Flanked by snow-capped volcanic peaks and sprawled across the Guayllabamba River valley in the country’s northern highlands, few of the world’s capitals can claim as beautiful a setting as Quito, the Ecuadoran capital.
Its historical center, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, is described as one of the largest and best-preserved historical city centers in the Americas. There is no shortage of well-preserved and maintained colonial buildings, churches, monasteries and squares.
Situated at 2,800m (9,350 ft) above sea level, it’s also the second highest capital in the world, giving it a much cooler climate than another superlative, that of the capital city closest to the equator, would imply. With a population of 2.6 million, it is the second largest city in the country after the main port city of Guayaquil.
