Zurich City Hall – a Four Photo Tour

Atrium of Zurich City Hall, or Stadthaus

More precisely, four shots of the atrium at Zurich’s Stadthaus, or City Hall.

I attended a press conference there yesterday ahead of the European Athletics Championships and fell immediately for the structure’s neo-Gothic exterior and interiors. The atrium, viewed from each of the four floors, was particularly striking.

Built in two stages over the course of the final two decades of the 19th century, it opened officially in 1900 when the city was making its transition from provincial hub to European center.

The building underwent an extensive renovation from 2007-2010, at a cost of 59.5 million Swiss Francs (49 million EUR / 63.3 million USD).

It sits on the left bank of the Limmat River at Stadthausquai 17, next to the Fraumünster church. Open to visitors Monday through Friday.

And for the record, this quartet serve collectively as today’s Pic du Jour, the 212th (!!) straight.
