I’m covering the European Championships in Athletics in Zurich this week where we’ve been hit with torrential rains, a wind storm and unusually chilly conditions over the past three days. And a stadium with plenty of empty seats.
I’ve covered just about every world and European track and field championship since 2001 and don’t recall a turnout this low in a stadium the size of Letzigrund. One of the primary reasons? The exorbitant ticket prices. The cheapest day ticket —one ticket for both day and evening sessions— is 95 Swiss Francs, or 105 USD/ 78 EUR.
By most reasonable comparisons, everything in Switzerland, particularly in Zurich, is expensive. But I’m still baffled as to what organizers were thinking when they set these prices for a six-day competition.
At least the skies were nice tonight.
And for the record, today’s Pic du Jour is the 214th (!!) straight.
