I’ve been in Marrakech for a week now, three of those days planted firmly in the medina, and I can’t really figure out why the touts, venders and variety of other hustlers here have gotten such an unseemly reputation. Most people —yes, even those involved in some form of street commerce or another— are like this man, who sold me my morning orange juice, fresh squeezed, in the central Jemaa el-Fnaa Square the past two mornings.
Even every one involved in this afternoon’s four-man operation that led me to an unplanned and unrequested tour of a tannery and its associated shop deep in the labyrinth that is the medina, were congenial, even after I made it clear that they wasted their time on someone who has essentially stopped shopping. Nothing personal. More on that another time.
