Still Illuminating The Darkness: Happy Birthday, Bob Marley

Bob Marley in the supply building near Bolivian border post near Laguna Verde

Bob Marley would have been 70 today. Some are taken from us much too soon. Yet Marley can still be found everywhere.

This was taken in a small out building on the Chilean side of the frontier near the Bolivian border post at Portezuelo del Cajón, a mountain pass that separates it from Chile in the high Atacama. At 4,488m (14,724 ft) above sea level, it’s home to one of the highest immigration and customs check points on the planet. Bob Marley is there, too.

Whenever I see a Marley mural or painting or his picture on a mototaxi, car or bus, I’m reminded of what Carlos Jones, a Cleveland musician and songwriter, told me in an interview more than a decade ago, soon after he recorded ‘Torchbearer’, his own tribute to Marley.

“Each of us that were touched by (Marley) in our lifetimes, we carry a part of that too,” Carlos said. “Each of us in our own way, whether we’re musicians or not, we can carry that little bit of light, or truth, forward. Whatever it was that it made us feel, and try to pass it on.”

It bears remembering that the magnitude and scale of his legacy, his accomplishments, and his timeless unifying message can’t be understated. Thirty-four years after his passing, Marley’s remains one of the most recognized faces on the planet. I’ve seen hundreds of tributes to Marley in dozens of countries. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a corner of the planet where Marley as icon doesn’t appear.

“Marley was a torchbearer,” Carlos continued.

“When he passed on, he passed the torch. But not just to one person –to everyone within earshot. To carry a little candle flame and help illuminate the darkness.”

And for the record, today’s Pic du Jour, the 389th straight, was snapped on 26 Marcy 2013. It also fits nicely, in my mind anyway, for this week’s WordPress Photo Challenge theme, scale.
