The Day I Wanted to Visit Ho Chi Minh

Today’s Pic du Jour, the blog’s 659th straight, is a reminder of the day, five years ago today, that I wanted to visit Ho Chi Minh. But he wasn’t there.

If you missed it, here’s a very short bit I posted from Hanoi on 24 October 2010 bemoaning my bad luck with visits to the embalmed bodies of communist icons. I hope at least some of you have had better luck than me. 🙂

I did get to see the embalmed body of Mao Zi Dong ( Mao Tse Tung), after waiting for hours in line at Tiananmen Square some years ago. The huge line meant that by the time you got to the body, you just caught a brief glimpse and were pushed by the crowd to keep moving.

Not me. I stepped out of the line to stare like a stunned mullet at the body. It was so lifelike, thus so bizarre… creepy almost. His cheeks had a rouge blush and — no, too creepy. I’m glad I saw it though. People kept asking me to move along, eventually a guard had to come and take my arm and push me along. it was, well, mesmerising.

Great story, and good for you for taking some time to take it all in. Creepiness and all.
