Phone Booth, Ushuaia (and a Quick Survey)

Phone booth Ushuaia

When was the last time you used a pay phone?

This was taken three years ago today near the bottom of the world in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, the southernmost city on the planet. It reminded me of an elevator to hell.

It was the last time I used a pay phone. Or, more precisely, a phone booth.

Whenever you step outside in Ushuaia, you should do so prepared to encounter at least three seasons. About twenty minutes after I took this, I returned to take cover from a swirling downpour that emerged from the proverbial “nowhere”. I didn’t make any calls though.

For the record, today’s Pic du Jour, the site’s 757th straight, was snapped on 30-Jan-2013. I think it works reasonably well for vibrant, this week’s WordPress.com photo challenge.

Well for what it’s worth the booths themselves are staying in many places, just re-worked. Did you see this? They’re being used as free wifi spots around New York City: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/01/25/connected

We used a pre-paid card to call Ireland from public phones when we moved to Spain, until we bought a house and put a landline in. That was the last time I used a phone box so it must have been about twelve years ago. We bought our first mobile phones fifteen years ago when we arrived in Spain.

      “Phone box” – there’s a term I don’t hear every day. 🙂

That’s what we called them here in Ireland, lol. This very enterprising Irish company is intent on keeping their memory alive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd75Z35Ox4M

Can’t remember either… don’t know if I ever used one during my travels abroad, which would have been the opportunity…

Has to be the mid-eighties….I don’t think they even exist around here anymore.

Wow. That IS a long time ago.
