Pic du Jour: Sand Dunes at Sunrise, Southern Qatar

Sand Dunes at Sunrise, Southern Qatar

Sand Dunes at Sunrise in Southern Qatar

I booked a 04:30 ride yesterday morning to catch the sunrise at the Khor al Adaid, or so-called Inland Sea, that sits at the edge of a natural desert border of high rolling sand dunes between Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

I knew even before the pre-dawn light began to appear that the conditions wouldn’t be ideal. In fact, each direction featured wildly different conditions. Here, facing northwest, I was met by a swirling fog that made the stark landscapes appear even more desolate, dreamy and sublime.

It wasn’t the sunrise I was expecting, but I was glad to experience it. Look for a post about the early morning desert excursion later this week.

Today’s Pic du Jour, the site’s 779th straight, was taken near Khor Al Adaid, in the Arabian desert of southern Qatar, on 20-Feb-2016.

Even a seasoned painter couldn’t capture this with a brush. Love it!

That is a sublime photo.Glad you shot it even though it wasn’t what you were expecting. Also happy that this isn’t an audio blog, although I’m pretty sure you would NOT be one of those people who annoy the heck out of me by mispronouncing Qatar. 😉

How do people mispronounce it? I’ve heard a few variations of KAY-tar.

Mostly like catarrh, as if they were talking about a respiratory ailment. At least here in the good old USA, where nobody even knows what catarrh is in the first place LOL!

For me a far better and more interesting photo than your average super sunrise, 100 times over!! I have, in another life been in that area of the globe and LOVED it.
