Pic du Jour: Achotillo

A year ago today I was eating achotillo, or rambutan, in Quito. Have you ever had one? A little more about them is here. (And no, they don’t crawl off their plates.)

~~

And for the record: today’s Pic du Jour, the site’s 799th straight, was taken in Quito, Ecuador, on 12 March 2015.

They do look like rather like bugs! I’d be interested in trying one. You mentioned prickly pear in the original article – it’s very common where I live. In fact, I have it in my backyard. I like the fruit, but not the pads.

So nice having fruit in the backyard, isn’t it? I really liked prickly pear, had it for the first time in Morocco. Not too much of it here in Slovenia. 🙂

Wow this brought back memories! When I was five years old we lived in Singapore and I remember eating these rambutan a lot. A bit like grape texture on the inside. Very occasionally I see them in luxury food stores in England but of course they are very expensive.

They’re pricey here too – I haven’t bought them anywhere outside of their local domains. I’d rather stick with stuff that is fresh locally.
