This is one of several shots I made of Iraqi singer Kadim Al Sahir during a brief concert appearance he made in Doha, Qatar in early 2015.
I remembered that 30-minute set last night when reading that among the ports of call for Stars on Board, a week-long cruise featuring some of the biggest pop stars in the Middle East, was Slovenia’s main port in Koper.
Al Sahir, a UN Goodwill Ambassador for his native Iraq, was among the performers on the cruise which began in Venice and took in stops in Corfu, Greece, Kotor, Montenegro, and Dubrovnik, Croatia before its final stop in Koper before returning to Venice.
I’m not at all a fan of cruises or generic “Middle Eastern” pop –whatever it is that term entails– but did appreciate Al Sahir’s performance in Doha, one that relied heavily on classical orchestral accompaniments –mostly strings and percussion— and traditional regional instruments.
More on Al Sahir, who has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, in the original gallery post.
Today’s Pic du Jour, the site’s 924th straight, was snapped in Doha, Qatar on 19 January 2015. I liked how certain subtle details appear only after his black suit is blended into the darkly-lit background.
