Slovenia Wine Notes – A Visit to the Jakončič Winery

Sanja Muzaferija of Total Croatia Wine visits the Jakončič winery in western Slovenia’s Goriška Brda district which notably took home two medals from the 2016 Decanter Wine Awards – platinum for its 2013 Carolina Rebula (Ribolla Gialla) and gold for its 2012 Carolina Bela (white), a blend of 60% Chardonnay, 35% Rebula and 5% Sauvignon Blanc.

Winemaker Aljoša Jakončič was especially pleased with the reception given the Rebula, the first time the varietal was so awarded in the 14 year history of the British magazine’s annual competition.

“Carolina is our family pride and we are very happy the Decanter review recognised it. It’s an excellent award, while the platinum award for the Rebula is especially important. Rebula has always been slightly underrated as a sort so we tried especially hard to change that perception.”
