Recalling a Barcelona Pickpocketing Episode

Pasage de la Paz, Barcelona

Last weekend some colleagues and I were exchanging stories of being pickpocketed, tales of near-misses from the road.

Mine came in Barcelona a half dozen years ago, when I managed to fend off a pair of petty thieves who were working in concert on a crowded metro by yelling obscenities at them. I offer no guarantees, but it was effective for me. I posted about it at the time; if you missed it and have 70 seconds to kill, do check it out.

The image? From a much more peaceful corner of Barcelona which manages to live up to its name. The full uncropped image is below.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. I’ve had a few very close calls which tells me not to push my luck.

The second time, I knew it was happening but was crushed among a huge crowd on the Chicago el and couldn’t even turn around to confront the offender. They only got an antique Palm Pilot with nothing useful on it, but still…(my wallet was buried under a bunch of stuff in the bottom of a huge backpack which was impossible to access in the people crush). Ever since, I have not worn the backpack either while waiting or on the train. Always in my hands. And always on the lookout for “set-up” situations.

          Glad it wasn’t too bad.

Always being on the lookout, remaining vigilant, can get really exhausting. I felt that way last year when I spent a couple months in Bogota. Always on watch.

I haven’t, knock on wood, had the experience. Hoping not to on our travels!
