This is an informal portrait of Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa, the Olympic champion and world record holder in the 400 meters, taken a few weeks ago during a press event in Monaco.
Van Niekerk, shortlisted for this year’s World Athlete of the Year honor by the IAAF, track and field’s international governing body, was one of 16 athletes who met with members of the media in the lead-in the IAAF World Athletics Awards event on December 2 in the Principality.
The 24-year-old produced an extraordinary 2016 season, running unbeaten in 11 finals over three distances. He capped the year with an extraordinary 43.03 world record in Rio, a performance which took down the record Michael Johnson held for 17 years.
For the van Niekerk-curious, a few more snaps and a brief Q&A from the Monaco event are on my other site here.
For the record: today’s Pic du Jour, the site’s 1,077th straight, was snapped in Monte Carlo, Monaco, on 2 December 2016.
