Cleopatra, Oedipus, Achilles and Antigone, Waving Hello

Detail - Golden House, Gdansk, Poland, July 2016

There’s probably a joke here somewhere — “So Cleopatra, Oedipus, Achilles and Antigone walk onto a rooftop…” — but I’m too tired and unfamiliar with their stories to come up with one. Any takers?

This quarter is waving from atop the Golden House, in Gdansk, considered the most stately building in the northern Polish city. According to at least one source, it’s haunted by the ghost of Judyta Speymann, the wife of Jan Speymann, who was the city’s mayor in the first decades of the 17th century.

This photo is is one 33 that make up this architectural tour of the former free city of Danzig’s Główne Miasto, or ‘Main City’ district, in and around its historical center. Do check it out.

And for the record: today’s Pic du Jour, the site’s 1,262nd straight, was snapped in July 2016.

Excellent – I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, a really attractive city. Good seafood, too.
