Wine Shops: Przyjaciele na Winie, Torun, Poland

This is Przyjaciele na Winie, a small shop located on the fringes of Torun, Poland’s old town center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In English, the name is ‘Friends on Wine’, fitting for its intimate set-up and gracious service.

An occasional series featuring wine shop discoveries from the road.
The selection is small by many standards, but given the location and immediate geography, it’s diverse. This region of Poland isn’t one of its wine hubs –the country’s small but growing wine scene is mainly centered in the south– so the truly local offering, my chief interest, was small, with just five Polish bottles available from the Turnau Vineyards located in the northwestern village of Baniewice just south on Szczecin on the German border. (I bought three.)

The rest were from about a dozen other countries, mainly Hungary and Slovakia –not a surprise given the geography and common history– with bottles from Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy and Spain also lining the shelves. Most were unknown to me with one surprising exception: Primosic, a small winery in Italy’s Collio that we worked with nearly 20 years ago.

And to get your bearings, about a 10-15 minute minute walk from the city hall and market square in Torun’s old town.
